Collection Care Workshop at the Central Asian Museum, Leh

The Shesrig Foundation conducted a Collection Care Workshop at the Central Asian Museum, Leh, from 24th to 30th August, with the support of Tata Trusts. The workshop focused on strengthening the museum’s collection management practices and improving the documentation, organisation, and long-term preservation of its cultural artefacts. As part of the initiative, the museum’s collection was systematically documented, and a catalogue was prepared to create a more organised record of the objects. New labels were designed to improve object identification and accessibility, while the existing storage facility was reorganised to ensure better arrangement, handling, and care of the collection.

The workshop emphasised the importance of systematic documentation and preventive conservation in safeguarding cultural heritage. Proper cataloguing, clear identification, and well-organised storage are essential steps towards ensuring that museum collections remain accessible for research, education, and future generations. Through this collaborative initiative, Shesrig Foundation continues to support the development of sustainable collection care practices and strengthen the institutional capacity of museums in Ladakh. The support of Tata Trusts has contributed to these efforts to preserve and manage the region’s rich cultural heritage. The workshop marks an important step in enhancing the Central Asian Museum’s collection management systems and reinforcing its role as a centre for the preservation, interpretation, and dissemination of Ladakh’s diverse cultural heritage.
